What is the difference between Invisalign® clear braces and traditional metal braces? They both treat dental issues such as overbites, underbites, crossbites, gapped teeth, and crowded teeth. They both straighten your teeth. However, they do have some striking differences in terms of diet, dental care, appearance, comfort levels, and required maintenance.
Eat Any Food You Like!
Traditional braces limit you the foods you can eat. Because of the way the brackets are mounted to your teeth, it’s possible that certain foods could get stuck in, and even damage, the brackets.
For this reason, you’re asked to stay away from chewy foods (bagels, pizza), crunchy foods (popcorn, chips), sticky foods (caramel, gum), hard foods (nuts, candy), and many more.
Invisalign® clear braces are removable. This means you can eat any food you want without fear of damaging your aligners. Simply remove them prior to eating!
Brushing and Flossing
With traditional braces, brushing and flossing can be a chore. You have to remove bands, clean carefully around wires and pins, brush each wire, and then brush your teeth to prevent food from getting stuck and creating plaque build-up. When flossing, you need to take care with the main wire.
With Invisalign® clear braces, you don’t have any of these worries. Slip off your aligner before brushing and flossing normally. To clean your actual aligner, soak it in Invisalign® cleaning crystals, then clean it with clear antibacterial soap while brushing gently. That’s it!
Although the appearance of traditional metal braces has improved, they are still highly visible. With all of the metal wires, brackets, and rubber bands, metal braces tend to call attention to themselves.
Invisalign® clear braces are made of a clear, BPA-free material that is nearly invisible. These clear braces are subtle and hard to see. At times, your aligners may go completely unnoticed.
With traditional metal braces, it’s common to experience discomfort, mouth sores, or injuries to your gums, cheeks, or tongue. These irritations are often caused by the brackets on your teeth as well as broken wires.
Invisalign® clear aligners are made from a smooth material, which can help reduce the discomfort and mouth sores. Material like this also prevents the injuries traditionally caused by broken wires. Invisalign® clear braces are also less likely to cause gum irritation than traditional braces.
For busy adults and teens, the number of appointments usually associated with traditional metal braces can be daunting. Visits are required every few weeks to tighten brackets and ensure the treatment is effective. If you break a bracket, this means yet another visit to the office.
In contrast, Invisalign® clear braces do not require these constant visits. You simply pick up new sets of aligners as needed and come in every other month or so for a progress check. This is great news for you because you can keep your busy schedule without fussing over your orthodontic treatment!
